12.30.09A Look At Some Of The Different Motorcycle Engines
Motorcycles have been around for more than ten decades. During this time, motorcycle engines have developed through tweaking and reworking items to get the best performance. There have been more than one dozen engines, but some never met with success. Cost efficiency and customer satisfaction brought failure to a number of motorcycle engines.
All motorcycle engines are fueled by gasoline. To best understand engine types, it is important to understand how an engine works.
A pole called a rod cranks inside the engine and creates a draft that pulls both gasoline and air into a chamber called the cylinder. Inside the cylinder, a piston and rod quickly move up to push the gasoline and air into a smaller space where it meets the spark plug. The spark plug produces a spark between its two metal pieces.
Once the spark plug gives off a spark, the gasoline and air explode. This pushes the piston down, which in turn drives the belt or chain. This action is called torque. The movement of the belt or chain causes the rear wheel of the motorcycle to revolve. A motorcycle’s performance is determined by how many cylinders are inside the engine and how they are arranged.
Single cylinder engine:
A single cylinder engine has one cylinder and one piston. Single cylinder engines are used in all off road motorcycles. The single cylinder provides a lot of torque, but also a load of vibration. The vibration is loud and one of the qualities that dirt bike race fans crave during a race.
Twin cylinder engine:
Logically, twin cylinder engines have two cylinders. The cylinders are placed together at an angle. Usually the cylinders are positioned at a 90 degree angle, but there are exclusions to that standard. A twin cylinder engine produces more power because there is more torque and more fuel used. Twin cylinder engines do not vibrate as much as a single cylinder engine.
Now, as stated above, there are exceptions. The boxed or boxer design finds cylinders placed side by side. This produces even less vibration, but adds a new issue. The cylinders tend to jut out the side of the bike, which makes it hard to take sharp corners. Another issue is the tremendous heat that the cylinders project; it makes leg protection a necessary evil.
Triple Cylinder Engines
A three cylinder engine finds the cylinders included in a head. This type of engine offers a load of power, but it also requires more parts. Each cylinder requires an additional fuel injector and carburetor. The more cylinders included on an engine, the higher the engine RPM. More RPM means more power. Triumph makes motorcycles using three cylinders and boy can they fly!
Four Cylinder Engines
The four cylinder engine is just like the three cylinder engine only it has the additional cylinder and therefore weighs more. As is true of any engine, more cylinders equal more power and smoother sailing.
It is important to consider how much size and power you require in your motorcycle. If you are taking your bike off road, you need a bike with plenty of torque and a low rpm to make it up hills and quickly navigate corners. For off roading, stick with a single cylinder. A double cylinder is your second choice.
If your main purpose for riding a motorcycle is riding through traffic and along roads, do not purchase a bike with less than a twin cylinder engine, although a three or four cylinder engine is a better idea.

BMW has a loyal fan base which has helped it lead the market among European motorcycle manufacturers. But challengers to the throne like KTM are aggressively seeking to gain some of that market share. In the world of sports they say that competition brings out the best (and worst) in people, and that’s the same spirit that the boys in Bavaria have used to bring some of that market back home. Looking at its current lineup, BMW brass realized that among its 650cc singles, 1,200cc boxer twins and in-line fours it had, well, nothing in between. It needed a bike to fill that gap and attract more first-time buyers to the BMW experience. The new F800ST (and its sportier brother, the F800S) is the answer. Call them the affordable Beemers.
The F800ST being a BMW a range of options is available, including ABS brakes and matching saddlebags. There’s a clever ratchet system to adjust their size and they’re practical enough, if not the capacious carriers of the older machines.
Two key ingredients for successful sport touring are fuel economy and the functionality of the saddlebags. Despite its 800cc, the Beemer is surprisingly efficient with fuel. We averaged just a tick above 46 mpg in a variety of riding conditions, ranging from the quick canyon blast to the weekend getaway. That efficiency could come in handy, too, as the tank only holds 4.1 gallons. Something we noticed was that our ST’s fuel gauge would always show a full tank, even after traveling more than 100 miles, which should put the bike at about half a tank. It wasn’t until the 150-mile mark or so that the gauge would suddenly drop and show a quarter of a tank remaining. Weird.
What really sets this bike apart however is in the turns. Although I was by no means dragging knees on the demo, I have NEVER RIDDEN A BIKE THAT WAS AS RESPONSIVE AND EASY TO TURN. Pressure on the bars send this bike side to side VERY quickly and it tracks very well once put there. The suspension soaks up midcorner bumps with ease, and exhibits no problems on the brakes. (Dive etc…) It is much more well sorted than other BMW suspensions I have ridden (telelever). Brakes are not sportbike powerful but are more than sufficient and give excellent feedback. ABS….works….and is odd on a motorcycle. You choose whether you need/want it. Although I didn’t ride with a pax, my wife came and sat on it and said that the comfort was similar to the Sprint ST and substantially better than the SV.
From the Saddle
BMWs get better the harder and longer you ride them, and the F800ST was no exception. A pleasure cruise through the country may be pleasant on just about any motorcycle, but when I rode the F800 between Montreal and Toronto it was a long, hard and fast day.
Characteristic Bimmer quirks are absent, like the sideways twitch when blipping the throttle and scuffed cylinder heads from aggressive cornering. And who can’t appreciate a gearbox that doesn’t clunk when cogs engage.

Mod Culture
1950’s Britain and 1950’s America contrasted greatly; while there was something of a golden age occurring in the States, Britain was still reeling from the effects of World War Two. In this climate the Mods rose; teenagers rejecting the Technicolor fairytales that were been fed to them through the mediums of radio, TV and cinema. In addition they rebelled against the stuffy, repressed and class-obsessed status quo that their parents generation were sleeping through. Unlike their world weary elders, they benefited from full employment and hire purchase which gave them the freedom to purchase an image. A new movement known as the ’teddy boys’ began to spread like wildfire throughout the country; it was greatly influenced by the American Rock and Roll movement. Bill Haley’s cult movie, Rock Around the Clock premiered in the Trocadero in London’s Elephant &Castle, the teddies went in their droves, joyously rioting afterwards, driving the establishment nuts and sending the media into a rapturous frenzy. Of course the big kahunas in the music and rag trades copped onto the tide and began to produce the goods that the teddy boys needed. It was all about being hip, clean-cut and sharp – they ate up Italian and French art films to get ideas of what to wear. To their hard-working, masculine, men’s-men fathers they were like Martians – with their penchant for dandy clothes, spending cash on records, dancing all-night – basically embracing hedonism, consumerism and profligacy. Fathers watched in horror as their sons pranced about babbling about shopping and clothes – topics that were thus far the preserve of women. Their sons however mocked their concerns, laughing at their obsession with class which had got them no-where but keeping them subservient and down-trodden.
Instead of heading down to the local for a pint of bitter, the Mods met up in coffee-shops, attracted by the late opening hours and the R&B jukeboxes. The success of the Mod movement, though proved it’s downfall – by the late 1950s everybody wanted a piece of the action- and so the movement became the norm, ’twas no longer underground and rebellious – it fizzled out – the teddy boys were no more. Or at least, they were no longer as one, many fell by the way-side but many got into one of the dozens of sub-cultures that sparked off the Mod fire. Two of the most prominent were the Ton Up Boys and the Coffee Bar Cats – the former donned leathers, rode motorcycles and were fully signed up to the ideals of American Rock and Roll; the latter embraced the neo-Italian look riding around on their Vespas. These two groups would evolve into the Mods and the Rockers and there certainly was no love lost between the two. To the mod, the scooter was a fashion accessory; they customized them by painting them and over accessorising them with luggage racks, crash bars and dozens of mirrors. Practicality was also involved, public transport did not run late into the night, so the scooter helped the mod get around the city, spilling from club to club, allowing all night dancing and partying to be possible. This also led to the ubiquitous fish-tail parka jacket which was worn to keep their suits sharp and themselves warm. The Rockers chose power- stripped down and raw, they spent more dough on their bikes, than they did on themselves. Generally, but not strictly, rockers came from rural areas whereas Mods were more of an urban phenomenon.
Of course the Mods and Rockers clashed, the antagonism reached its peak in the summer of 1964, when hundreds of youths fought running battles with themselves and the police in the seaside resorts of Clacton, Margate, Bournemouth and Brighton. However, the media reports of the time greatly over-exaggerated the severity of these incidents causing some moral panic and vindication by the older generations that these youth movements were decadent rabble.
As psychedelic rock music and the hippie subculture began to become popular in the UK, the Mod lifestyle began to peter out. Some of the great Mod bands such as The Who and The Small Faces had changes their styles and really no longer considered themselves as Mods. The “peacock” or “fashion” wing of mod culture evolved into the Bohemian style of London hippie culture, which favoured the gentle, marijuana-infused contemplation of esoteric ideas and aesthetics, which contrasted sharply with the frenetic energy of the mod ethos. However, there was a small core that did not relate to the middle-class hippie movement’s drug-oriented and intellectual music. They began listening to Jamaican Ska and attending underground house parties and clubs and adopting the Rude Boy look of pork-pie hats and too-short Levi jeans. These ‘Hard Mods’ soon evolved into the first skinheads, a non-political group who hung with black Rude Boys in West Indian clubs. These early skinheads retained some of the basic elements of Mod clothing such as Fred Perry and Ben Sherman shirts, Sta-Prest trousers and Levi’s jeans but they mixed them with working-class oriented accessories such as braces and Dr. Marten work boots.

Christmas is coming up upon us and the kids want toys. They know that it is a given that they’re going to get what they want for Christmas, within reason. So it is good that you’re up on the best toys for Christmas 2008 so that you can meet those demands. However, you may be an individual who loves Christmas shopping and you may be one of those who hate it. For the boys

For the girls
The debate goes on as to whether or not girls are harder to shop for than boys. It is probably equal because boys are picky about lots of things. Then you have the little girls who love baby dolls that have their own bodily functions requiring new diapers every single week. They keep repeating to you over and over that their baby needs diapers until you finally give in and buy those diapers.
For the little girls, there are a lot of toys that make their list every year. Many of them surround such figures as Barbie, Bratz dolls, dolls that drink and “do their business” all on their own, and stuffed animals that look real and sound real. The list can go on and on, but there are some toy items that little girls have always loved and will continue to love, even through until Christmas 2008.
Amongst those items are doll houses. They love doll houses, especially when they have interactive features with them. They also love it when the dollhouse is large enough for them to put new furniture in and allow other dolls to move in. They love it when they are given a house that allows them to be creative.
Another thing that little girls love is kitchen sets. Throw in the doll and you have a full fledged imaginary mommy.
The girls also love video games. Whether it is the Nintendo Wii, the computer, or another game system, there are games that are made for the girls as well. Boys are not the only ones that have the privilege of enjoying video games. The girls can enjoy Mario, Barbie, and a plethora of other characters in this interactive form.

So now that you know that you can breathe while Christmas shopping, just have some fun. Imagine the look on your child’s face on Christmas morning. Whether they asked for the gift or not, they’re going to love whatever you got them. Actually, they may not realize that it was you who purchased the items. The kids may be really excited that Santa Clause read their minds and brought them exactly what they wanted, even if they did not specify in their letter to Santa.
As for how you can acquire the best toys for Christmas 2008, you don’t have to battle the crowds. That is one of the reasons why so many individuals are so stressed when they are Christmas shopping. They are stressed because they let the crowds get to them. Fortunately, we have the Internet and that means a lot of these toys, if not all of them, can be purchased online. When they are purchased online, they can be shipped right to your home. That means you don’t have to worry about fighting long lines, dodging large groups of people, and encountering stressed cashiers and floor associates.
Most of all, the Internet allows you to find what it is you need. If a store doesn’t carry it, you know you can find it online. That brings about this question; If everything you need is easily accessible on the Internet, why worry about fighting the mall crowds? When you’re dealing with the best toys for Christmas 2008, you can pretty much bank on it not being in the store.
